Sen. Lautenberg Statement on Death of Lockerbie Bomber

Statement

Date: May 20, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) today issued the following statement upon the death of Abdel Baset al-Megrahi:

"Abdel Baset al-Megrahi died with American blood on his hands and will always be remembered as a murderer. It is shameful that he was released from prison and allowed to spend his final years at home where he was treated as a hero. His death may bring some level of closure to the families of the victims, but his misdeeds will never be forgotten and our pursuit of justice will continue."

Senator Lautenberg has long served as an advocate for the families of the victims of the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing. He was a member of the President's Commission to investigate the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing and played a critical role in securing compensation for the families. Lautenberg is still working to further investigate the Pan Am bombing and other acts of terrorism attributable to the Libyan government.
